It's Time for the Dime!

Things are heating up, and I’m not just talking about the climate! The New York State Legislature is on the cusp of passing its budget for the year–over a month late–which means they can finally turn their attention to the many important policy issues that need their action. Chief among those, for us, is the Bigger Better Bottle Bill (A6543/S5684). The passage of this legislation, for which we’ve been pushing for years now, would be hugely significant for canners. It would mean increasing the bottle deposit from 5 cents to 10 cents–potentially doubling canners’ income. It would mean adding more beverages to the system, including very common brands that are arbitrarily excluded and end up littered, like Gatorade, Snapple, coffee, tea, and more. It would mean more money for redemption centers like Sure We Can to be able to serve canners and any New Yorker who wanted to participate and get their deposit back.
It’s not an easy fight–we’re going up against the big beverage corporations who want to be able to pollute with impunity, and they have the clout and resources to muddy the facts and weave misleading narratives. We’ve gathered a great deal of support throughout the state, and dozens of co-sponsors, but in New York, these things don’t move unless the Democratic leaders are on board. That’s why we’re mobilizing all of our grassroots support to let Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins know that this bill matters to their constituents, and needs to pass now!
If you’re a New Yorker, there are several ways to get involved. First, please sign our petition to Andrea Stewart-Cousins, urging her to make the bill a priority. You can also call either office directly and tell them how important this is! Finally, perhaps the best way to help is to join us in organizing and mobilizing your peers! There are so many people who want to see healthy, common sense policy and programs implemented, but don’t know how to get started. If this issue, or the plight of canners more broadly, fires you up, just reply to this email and we’ll let you know how to get even more deeply involved.
With their dallying over the budget, legislators have raised the stakes. The 2025 legislative session ends June 12th. We only have a few short weeks to change history. It’s time for the dime!!

Las cosas se están calentando, y ¡no estoy hablando solo del clima! La Legislatura del Estado Nueva York está casi a punto de pasar su presupuesto para el año–más de un mes tarde–que significa que ellos pueden mover su atención a los asuntos políticos que necesitan su acción. Lo mejor para nosotros es la Ley de Envases Más Grande y Mejor (A6543/S5684). Si podemos pasar esta ley, para la que hemos empujado de años, sería tan importante para los recicladores. Significa crecer el depósito de botellas de 5 centavos a 10–un doble ganancia para los recicladores. Significa poner aumentar el sistema con más marcas, incluyendo a marcas muy comunes pero todavía no incluidas, como Gatorade, Snapple, café, té, y más. Significa más dinero para centros de reciclaje cómo Sure We Can para servir a recicladores y cada uno que quiere participar y tener el depósito otra vez.
No es una lucha fácil–estamos peleando con las empresas enormes de bebidas que quieren contaminar sin responsabilidad, y tienen la influencia y recursos para confundir los hechos y hacer historias falsas. Hemos cogido mucho apoyo en todo el estado, y muchos patrocinadores, pero en el estado Nueva York, las cosas no siguen sin la aprobación de los líderes del Partido Demócrata. Por eso estamos movilizando todo nuestro apoyo de las bases para comunicar al Altavoz de la Asamblea Carl Heastie y la Líder del Mayoría en el Senado Andrea Stewart-Cousins que este asunto les importa a sus electores, ¡y necesita pasar inmediatamente!

También puedes llamar a ambas oficinas y ¡decirles que importante es el asunto! Finalmente, quizás la manera mejor para ayudar es ¡unirnos en organizar y movilizar a tus iguales! Hay tantas personas que quieren ver a políticos sensibles hechos, pero no entienden cómo empezar. Con sus retrasos en hacer el presupuesto, los legisladores han elevado la apuesta. La sesión legislativa de 2025 acaba el 12 de junio. Solo tenemos algunas semanas cortas para cambiar la historia. ¡¡Es tiempo para el diez centavos!!
