March Forth on March 4th!

Another year, another legislative session. While most of the state is still freezing under layers of ice, Albany is heating up! We’re in the midst of state budget negotiations–billions and billions of dollars are at stake. The canners we serve have spent over four decades enhancing New York’s value, both directly, through their participation in local economies, and indirectly, by diverting hundreds of thousands of tons of solid waste off of our streets at no cost to the state or taxpayers. It’s beyond time that the state recognizes their contribution by raising the bottle deposit to 10 cents. We think it makes perfect sense–not just for canners, but even for the state’s budget, which actually stands to increase by over $100 million in revenue if the deposit goes up.
So why are we still here, after years of advocacy, pushing for New York to show common sense and make this change? Part of the reason is that officials feel like they can get away with inaction. That needs to change, and the way to do it is to show them that regular New Yorkers, like me or you, can’t wait any longer. That’s why we’re hosting a rally in Albany at noon on March 4th to show Kathy Hochul and the legislative leaders that the people care about this! If you think it’s past time for New York to stop dragging its feet on the waste crisis, if the redemption center you used to use has gone out of business, if you think the canner who picks up the bottles and cans on your street deserves human dignity, join us! Otro año, otra sesión legislativa. Mientras la mejor parte del estado todavía está frisando bajo niveles de hielo, ¡Albany se calienta! Estamos en medio de las negociaciones del presupuesto del estado–miles de millones de dólares están en juego. Los recicladores que servimos han pasado más que cuatro décadas fortaleciendo el valor de Nueva York, directamente por su participación en las economías locales, e indirectamente por divertir cientos de miles de toneladas de residuos sólidos sin gasto para el estado o los que pagan impuestos.
