September is Upon Us!

Dear friend,

I hope the summer is treating you well! August is an interesting month in NYC; while we don’t necessarily practice the much-praised habit of many Europeans in taking the entire month off, there’s definitely a big rhythm change in the city. Folks are on vacation or otherwise taking it easy, and as the thunderstorms roll through and the humidity keeps us sweating and swimming through the air, it can feel like there’s not much actually going on. If you’re dealing with late-summer malaise and looking for something to do or get involved in as the weather starts to cool and the city returns to its more typical character, Sure We Can has got you covered!

Before I get into that, however, we are still striving to raise money to address the ongoing challenges we’ve been facing due to structural problems in the redemption sector and the continued stagnation of New York’s bottle deposit. Please consider a gift to help us keep providing essential services! Now, on to the fun stuff:

First, this Saturday from 10a till 12p we’re hosting one of our monthly volunteer days, where you can come and learn about how the redemption system works and practice counting and sorting empty bottles and cans like canners do here every day. It’s more fun than you might think to sift through all the brands. You’ll never look at a bottle of water the same way again!

Next, on Sunday, September 13th, we’re hosting an event called Recycled Culture, which will feature local artists and musicians whose work is either materially or thematically connected to recycling, in a multimedia extravaganza from 3p till 7p. Join us to take in sculpture, paintings, experimental music, and spoken word that will make us think more deeply about the materials all around us and the communities and contexts they come from!

Then comes Climate Week, which is taking place in NYC the week of September 21st. Many people will be in town to participate in conferences, roundtables, panels, and more discussions on the global climate emergency, and how our communities and institutions can address it. In my experience, though these discussions are certainly necessary and interesting, the whole week can feel a little abstract and dry. If you’re in town that week and want to get a little more of a hands-on sense of the frontline work toward sustainability and the way Sure We Can tries to create authentic community-driven institutional change through advocacy, join us the evening of Wednesday September 23rd from 6-8p for our Advocacy Happy Hour, where you can get a tour of our site and a deep dive into the advocacy challenges we face, our plan to overcome them, and how you can be a part of it all!

¡Espero que el verano te esté tratando bien! El mes de agosto es interesante en NYC; no necesariamente practicamos el hábito muy elogiado de los europeos de tener todo el mes libre, hay un cambio distinto en el ritmo de la ciudad. La gente viaja o se relaja, y como las tormentas pasan y la humedad nos hace sudando sin parar y nadamos por el aire, puede sentir que no hay mucho pasando. Si tienes el malestar del tarde verano y buscas alguna cosa para hacer o involucrarse cuándo el clima se hace más frío y la ciudad regresa a su cara más familiar, ¡Sure We Can está aquí para ti!

Antes de hablar en eso, todavía estamos tratando de recaudar fondos para responder los desafíos que todavía enfrentamos por razón de los problemas estructurales en el sector de reciclar y la falta de cambio en el depósito de botellas. ¡Por favor considera donar para ayudarnos a seguir ofreciendo nuestros servicios esenciales! Ahora, adelante a las cosas más divertidas:

Primeramente, este sábado desde las 10 de la mañana hasta mediodía, presentamos uno de nuestros días de voluntad mensual, en que puedes venir y aprender cómo funciona el sistema de reciclar las botellas y latas y practicar contar y clasificar contenedores vacíos como hacen los recicladores aquí cada día. Es más divertido que parece de buscar en las marcas. ¡Nunca vas a ver una botella de agua de la misma manera otra vez!

Después, el domingo 13 de septiembre, presentamos un evento que se llama la Cultura Reciclada, en que presentamos artistas y músicos locales que tienen una práctica que tiene una relación con la idea de reciclaje, materialmente o temáticamente, en una celebración multimedia desde las 3-7 de la tarde. Únete con nosotros para ver esculturas, pinturas, música experimental, y poesía que puede empujarnos a pensar más profundamente en los materiales en todos los lados y las comunidades y contextos de que llegan.

Ahora llega la Semana Climática, que pasa en NYC en la semana del 21 de septiembre. Mucha gente estará en la ciudad para participar en conferencias, discusiones, paneles, y más para hablar sobre la emergencia mundial del clima, y cómo pueden responder nuestras comunidades e instituciones. En mi experiencia, aunque estas discusiones son importantes y necesarias, toda la semana puede sentirse un poco abstracta y seca. Si estás en la ciudad durante esa semana y quieres tener un sentido más directo del trabajo del frente al lado de sostenibilidad y la manera en que Sure We Can trabaja para hacer cambio institucionales auténticos y hecho por la comunidad, únete con nosotros en la tarde del 23 de septiembre desde las 6-8p para nuestra Happy Hour de Abogacía, en que puede tener un recorrido de nuestro sitio y una discusión profunda de los desafíos que enfrentamos, nuestros planes para vencerlos, y cómo puedes ser parte de todo!
