You Can Never Hold Back Spring
Dear friend,
Spring has sprung! What a relief to transition from heaps of snow and frozen wind to gentler air and budding trees. Even as it seems like the world is spinning out of control, I think it’s worth it to stop and enjoy the weather. Earth Day is coming up, and for me it’s a good time to remind myself that in addition to the Bottle Bill, and all the different issues and causes that matter in this moment, I’m also fighting for something deeper–life itself. It helps me remember that there’s something beautiful to fight for, not just horrible things to work against. It makes room for celebration and not just condemnation.
If you’re in New York City and are attracted to the idea of working, and celebrating, for a cause this April, you’re in luck! Events season is starting for us and we have a few things on deck you can get involved in. Join us this coming week as we kick off a collaboration with Siyan Wong, NYC Connect, and Welcome to Chinatown, where we’ll co-present Siyan’s beautiful paintings of Chinese-speaking canners alongside information on the Bigger Better Bottle Bill, at Welcome to Chinatown’s lovely space on Bowery. The exhibition opens on Tuesday, April 14, when we’ll also be hosting a silent auction to raise funds for a pop-up event later in the spring where we’ll simulate the conditions of the expanded Bottle Bill for one day. Come check out the event on Tuesday, and if you can’t make it, be sure to check out the exhibition while it’s open!
We also have a bunch of activities coming up at our McKibbin St. site on Earth Day itself–Wednesday, April 22nd. We’ll be hosting a street cleanup as well as a bottle and can sorting activity, seed planting, along with an educational panel and happy hour! Watch this space for more details to come. In the meantime, soak up the sun and don’t forget to smell the flowers!

¡La primavera ha empezado! Que alivio es cambiar de montañas de nieve y viento congelado al aire tranquilo y árboles en ciernes. Aunque parece que el mundo entero se está descontrolando, creo que es bueno pararse y disfrutar del clima. El Día de la Tierra viene, y para mi es un buen tiempo para recordarme que además de la Ley de Envases, y todos los asuntos y causas que importan en este momento, estoy también luchando para alguna cosa más profunda–la vida misma. Me ayuda recordar que hay alguna cosa hermosa por lo que luchar, no sólo cosas malas contra las que luchar. Se hace espacio para celebrar y no sólo condenar.
Si estás en la Ciudad Nueva York y te gusta la idea de trabajar, y celebrar, para una causa este abril, ¡estás de suerte! El tiempo de eventos está empezando, y estamos preparando algunas cosas para involucrarte. Únete con nosotros la semana que viene como empezamos una colaboración con Siyan Wong, NYC Connect, y Welcome to Chinatown, dónde juntos presentamos los cuadros hermosos hecho por Siyan de recicladores que hablan las idiomas Chinas juntos con información sobre la Ley de Envases Más Grande y Mejor, en el espacio lindo de Welcome to Chinatown en Bowery. La exhibición abre el martes, el 14 de abril, cuándo también presentamos una subasta silenciosa para recaudar fondos para un evento rápido más tarde en la primavera en que simularemos las condiciones de una Ley de Envases más grande por un día. Ven al evento el martes, y si no puedes, ¡asegúrate de ver los cuadros durante la exhibición!
También tenemos muchas actividades llegando a nuestro sitio en la calle McKibbin en el Día de la Tierra mismo–el miércoles 22 de abril. Presentamos una limpieza de la calle y también una actividad de voluntad de clasificar botellas y latas, y una actividad de plantar semillas, ¡con un panel educacional y un happy hour!
