Freezin' for a Reason - March 4th!

This snow is serious! The winter’s been unrelenting, and we’re once again shoveling out our space and trying to make ourselves ready to serve canners even in the harshest weather. Canners can’t afford to stop working when it’s bad out, which means we have to be just as unrelenting as the snow to be ready to receive them! The same sentiment applies in our advocacy efforts–no matter how intense the headwinds from Albany or the efforts of billion-dollar corporations to keep us from thriving, we’ll keep meeting them head-on and demanding our communities receive the respect and remuneration that they deserve!
If you, too, are fired up by challenges and feel inspired to take action to push our leaders to get on the right side of history, we have an amazing opportunity! Next Wednesday, March 4th, we’ll be heading to Albany to demand action on the Bottle Bill. You can RSVP to join us here; if you live in or near NYC, you can meet us for a free bus there and back! March Forth on March 4th!

Another year, another legislative session. While most of the state is still freezing under layers of ice, Albany is heating up! We’re in the midst of state budget negotiations–billions and billions of dollars are at stake. The canners we serve have spent over four decades enhancing New York’s value, both directly, through their participation in local economies, and indirectly, by diverting hundreds of thousands of tons of solid waste off of our streets at no cost to the state or taxpayers. It’s beyond time that the state recognizes their contribution by raising the bottle deposit to 10 cents. We think it makes perfect sense–not just for canners, but even for the state’s budget, which actually stands to increase by over $100 million in revenue if the deposit goes up.
So why are we still here, after years of advocacy, pushing for New York to show common sense and make this change? Part of the reason is that officials feel like they can get away with inaction. That needs to change, and the way to do it is to show them that regular New Yorkers, like me or you, can’t wait any longer. That’s why we’re hosting a rally in Albany at noon on March 4th to show Kathy Hochul and the legislative leaders that the people care about this! If you think it’s past time for New York to stop dragging its feet on the waste crisis, if the redemption center you used to use has gone out of business, if you think the canner who picks up the bottles and cans on your street deserves human dignity, join us! Onward and Upward

Making Meaning
Dear friend,
I hope you are spending this holiday season warm and safe. I hope, if you can, you’re resting. After a tough year, we’ve earned it!
The winter holidays make me reflect on my secular upbringing–I’ve mentioned this before, I think. I feel lucky to have been able to form my own understanding of the meaning of this time, my own relationship with its tropes–warmth in the cold, fellowship, generosity, renewal, persistence. I think the need to form meaning from conflicting or absent traditions has led me to the sense that it’s the forming of meaning that matters in the end–whether it comes from a candle flame, tree bough, gingerbread, or, for that matter, bottles and cans.
Sure We Can is a project formed in the same spirit–a coming together of people with different traditions and backgrounds in the in-between spaces, using the material of their lives to find meaning in charity, conviviality, solidarity–and work. It’s an effort to synthesize new traditions that can locate meaning in a challenging world, in which anyone can participate!

Our Essential Services! Two Weeks Left to Help!

Since I last wrote to you, we’ve made some great strides in our effort to raise $30,000 before the end of the year to maintain our staffing and programs in 2026. We’re less than $6000 away from our goal, with only two weeks left! To those who have donated and helped us get this far, thank you so much–we’re incredibly grateful. For those who are still sitting on the fence, the time is now! Help us keep this unique work alive!
Usually when I want to convey to someone how meaningful Sure We Can’s work is, I invite them to tour our main site in East Williamsburg. It occurs to me that many of you may not have had that opportunity, so I thought I’d share with you a bit about the special programs we offer, that we’re so invested in continuing in the coming year.
At Sure We Can, we…
- Offer extra income to canners if they count and sort their own bottles, meaning they can earn up to 20% more here than other redemption centers;
- Provide onsite space for canners to count and sort, protected from the elements–an extreme rarity for workers who usually have to wait on the street to be served by other redemption centers;
- Offer onsite storage where canners can stow bottles and cans in between visits, letting them more easily access the extra payment for sorted materials, as well as have more agency over their work by having a secure place to store materials;
- Host meetings, workshops, trainings, activities, and celebrations that bring the community together, create contexts for organizing, activism, organic interaction, and cultural engagement that would be otherwise extremely hard to find;
- Run outreach programs to provide canners with reliable information on public health, supportive resources, or their rights;
- Create workforce development opportunities for canners to work wage-paying jobs that they can supplement with bottle-and-can income;
- Present cultural events like, concerts, plays, and exhibitions from artists where canners and the broader local community can encounter each other and together share, learn, and grow.
There is no other redemption center in New York that offers any of these services. If we are forced to reduce or retract a service, canners won’t be able to find it anywhere else. That’s why we’re working so hard to raise this money, and that’s why we need your help! If you haven’t yet, please consider giving today!

If Not Us, Then Who?

We are almost halfway to meeting our goal to raise $30,000 before the end of the year in order to sustain staffing and programs in the coming year. Thank you so much to those who’ve already contributed!
These end-of-year nonprofit fundraisers are ubiquitous and may seem arbitrary, but let me assure you that this year, it’s urgently specific and real. Like many nonprofits working on social, economic, or climate justice efforts, we’ve felt the pinch of a shifting ideological atmosphere. It’s not just a change in tone—we’ve had funders back out of multi-year programs, grinding to a halt years-long community projects and leaving us with a $65,000 gap in 2026. At the same time, as we go another year without Bottle Bill expansion, participation in New York’s program is deteriorating; the 5 cent deposit value simply doesn’t cut it. Canners also have to work while navigating a culture that’s increasingly hostile to them—many are unable to leave their homes to work due to fear. The result is less redemption activity overall, leading to a drop of over $100,000 in our annual recycling revenue.
We’re fortunate to have had funders who are committed to our mission and who have helped us ameliorate some of these challenges, but it’s just not enough to grow, or even hold steady—grant approval processes are slower and more competitive than ever. This threatens the health of our unique programs that can’t be found anywhere else in New York, like community-sensitive redemption; canner engagement, outreach, and resource connection; and our critical effort to expand the Bottle Bill and create better systemic conditions for canners.
We need grassroots support to fill the gaps that institutions are creating through caution or cowardice and keep this work going—we need you! It was community power and community resources that began our mission and it will be the same things that help us keep moving forward. If this work means anything to you, please give!

Freezin for a Reason

My first job in New York City was canvassing for Planned Parenthood, between November of 2012 and April of 2013. I spent my first winter in NYC asking strangers on the street to support women’s health care–an immersive and grueling way to get to know the city and the overwhelming variety of people and opinions within it. Our tagline on particularly frigid days was, “We’re freezin’ for a reason!” I always seemed to find more success on those days–when conditions were more intense, it somehow became easier to do hard, principled work authentically. I think about those early cold weeks a lot, as the days outside darken, but also as the conditions in our culture continue to intensify. I think there’s something inherently energizing and human about rising to a challenge.
Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday 2025! It’s cold outside, but we’ve got some invigorating challenges to which you can rise. For the truly intrepid, join us onsite at Sure We Can for a volunteer activity sorting bottles and cans tomorrow between 11a and 1p. If that feels like too much for you, stop by for a brisk tour. And if you can’t make it out, there’s an even more accessible option–you can contribute to our end-of-year fundraiser, and help us raise $30,000 to maintain our staffing and programs in 2026. We’re under threat from neglected environmental policy, downturns in institutional giving, and poisonous public sentiment turned against immigrants, the environment, and all sorts of vital progressive causes. Simple Gratitude
Dear friend,
It feels like the world has spun around more than a few times since last Thanksgiving. It’s harder than ever to make a general sense of gratitude feel authentic–platitudes wilt in the face of the dismaying realities that assault us daily. If we aren’t to be lost in frustration, cynicism, and despair, the call to meaningfully reflect on and cultivate gratitude is very urgent. For me, the holiday of Thanksgiving presents an opportunity to simplify this effort, to find gratitude in small, real things, like being present with the people I care about, contemplating the renovation and renewal that comes with the waning of the year, and celebrating the pure sustenance of life and conviviality in sharing good food with others. I experience this as a kind of antidote to both the history of extraction and violence that goes with the holiday, and the ways that that history continues in our current time of trial.
Now’s also the time that end-of-year fundraising for organizations like ours begins in earnest, and the platitudes start pouring out in full force. We’re certainly not immune to this–we need financial support just like every other nonprofit, and we’re not shy about it. Still, when it comes to considering which of the many worthy and necessary causes in the world that could be supported, I like to think that Sure We Can can offer some measure of that same feet-on-the-ground simplicity. If you choose to support us with a donation before the end of the year, no matter the size, you will be participating in not just a generalized movement to transform culture, but the actual improvement of hundreds of workers’ day-to-day lives by providing access to those simple but vital things which can create enormous gratitude–community, sustenance, and growth. If you are able, I urge you to join us in helping raise $30,000 before the end of 2025 to fill gaps in our budget created by continued neglect of the Bottle Bill by lawmakers and drastic drops in institutional giving by funders. This simple support matters now more than ever.
This coming Tuesday, December 2nd, is “Giving Tuesday,” a great day to make a financial contribution, but also a great day to keep your feet on the ground and participate in something simply real, like the volunteer activity we’re hosting at Sure We Can, where you can help us count and sort bottles and cans as well as meet the canners we serve and like-minded allies–a chance to make a concrete offering and to build the community and sense of possibility that forms the container of that simple, all-important, gratitude. While I believe it will take more than gratitude for us to find our way through these dark days, I’m certain that without it, we’re already lost.

Siente cómo el mundo ha vuelto más que algunas veces desde el último Día de Acción de Gracias. Es más difícil que nada hacer un sentimiento general de agradecimiento sentir auténtico–los lugares comunes se marchitan de enfrentar las realidades duras que nos atacan diariamente. Si no queremos ser perdidos en la frustración, el cinismo, y la desesperación, la llamada para reflejarnos con intención y cultivar el agradecimiento tiene mucha urgencia. Para mi, la fiesta del Día de Acción de Gracias ofrece una oportunidad que simplificar este esfuerzo, y encontrar el agradecimiento en cosas pequeñas y reales, cómo ser presente con las personas a quien yo cuido, contemplar la renovación que pasa en acabar el año, y celebrar la subsistencia de la vida y lo cordial de compartir comida buena con los demás. Yo experimento esto cómo una antidota contra la historia de extracción y violencia que tiene la fiesta, y las maneras en que esta historia sigue en nuestro tiempo duro.
Ahora también es el tiempo de empezar a recaudar fondos a fin de año para organizaciones como nosotros, y en que los lugares comunes vienen con fuerza llena. No somos inmunes contra esto–necesitamos apoyo financiero y no somos tímidos de esto. Todavía, de considerar cuál de las causas importantes y valiosas en el mundo que alguien puede apoyar, me gusta pensar que Sure We Can puede ofrecer una parte de esta simplicidad. Si eliges en apoyarnos con una donación antes que fin del año, no importa el tamaño, puede participar no solo en un movimiento generalizado de cambiar la cultura, pero también en mejorar directamente las vidas de cientos de trabajadores por dar acceso en esas cosas simples pero necesarias que puede hacer agradecimiento enorme–comunidad, subsistencia, y crecencia. Si puedes, te pido en unirnos en recaudar $30,000 antes del fin de 2025 para llenar hoyos en nuestro presupuesto hecho por negligencia que sigue de la Ley de Envases por los funcionarios y caídas drásticas en donaciones de los instituciones que dan fondos. Este simple apoyo importa más que nada.
El martes que viene, el 2 de Diciembre, es el “Martes de Dar,” un día perfecto que dar dinero, pero también un día perfecto que quedar los pies por la tierra y participar en algo simplemente real, cómo la actividad de voluntad que estamos presentando en Sure We Can, en que puedes ayudarnos en clasificar botellas y latas y también conocer a los recicladores que servimos y los aliados que tienen la misma mente que ti–una oportunidad que hacer una ofrenda concreta y hacer la comunidad y sentimiento de posibilidad que hace el contenedor de este simple, pero todo-importante, agradecimiento. Aunque yo creo que necesita más que el agradecimiento que encontrar nuestro camino a través de estos días oscuros, estoy seguro que sin agradecimiento, ya estamos perdidos.

The Future Is Ours To Shape

Today, New York City woke up to the smell of political transformation in the air, carrying with it the idea that a door may be opening to a new sense of atmosphere and emphasis; one where community concerns, and the lives of real people, are prioritized. The narrow interests and the cruel and inflexible demands of the extractor class that tries at every turn to neutralize New Yorkers’ capacities to dream of and demand a better future are weakening. The people’s will to shape that future on their terms has had real consequences. It remains to be seen how all this will play out, but today we can enjoy that heady sense of possibility!

We’ll be talking about how to advocate to lawmakers about the issues that matter to you, and especially about expanding the New York State Bottle Bill to be more effective and supportive.
