Earth Week is Here!
Dear friend,
Earth Day is upon us!
In a context like the one around us, with so much chaos and turmoil pulling us in different directions, and fear and anxiety battering against our peace of mind, it can seem absurd or impossible to slow down. With so much going on, it’s hard to know what to do, what helps. That’s part of why I think one of the most radical and transgressive things people can do right now is change their rhythm, pause, and strive to attend themselves to what is real underneath all the noise. In this way, Earth Day is very timely–amidst stress and uncertainty, we can emphasize the practice of the caretaking and cultivation of our environment, including each other, that I believe can point the way, concretely, toward a more sustainable future.
That’s why Sure We Can is going all in on Earth Day, and presenting a bunch of earthy activities for you to get involved in! On Earth Day itself, Tuesday April 22nd, starting at 11am, we’ll be conducting a cleanup of the streets around our headquarters site on McKibbin street, along with a shared lunch followed by seedling planting and bottle and can counting and sorting. You can help us make the neighborhood more beautiful, support the work of canners, and go home with a seedling of your own all in one day! On Wednesday the 23rd, I’ll be speaking on a panel at Brooklyn College hosted by Congresswoman Yvette Clarke on sustainability. Thursday the 24th, from 1-3pm, we’ll host volunteers at our new satellite site at 1762 East New York Ave, where we’ll be cleaning up those streets as well as planting up the site so it can transform throughout the spring from a barren lot into beautiful green space for all to enjoy! Finally, on Saturday the 26th, from 12-2pm, we’ll be hosting another counting and sorting activity on McKibbin St, in collaboration with Brooklyn Org.
So join us, slow down, and get your hands dirty! And watch this space–we’ll have more news coming soon about the Bottle Bill and our efforts to raise the NY bottle deposit from 5c to 10c. And if you just can’t wait, come see us in person and get involved!

¡El Día de la Tierra ha llegado!
En un contexto como el que tenemos, con tanto caos y confusión nos jalando a cada lado, y el miedo y ansiedad atacando a nuestra tranquilidad de mente, puede parecer absurdo o imposible ir más despacio. Con tantas cosas pasando, es difícil saber lo que debemos hacer, lo que ayuda. Esta es parte de la razón por la que yo creo que una de las cosas más radicales o transgresivas que uno puede hacer ahorita es cambiar el ritmo, parar, y tratar de atender a lo que tiene realidad bajo todo el ruido. En esta manera, el Día de la Tierra llega en buen tiempo–dentro del estrés y la incertidumbre, podemos enfatizar el práctico de cuidar y cultivar el medioambiente, incluye a los demás, que yo creo puede dirigirnos actualmente a un futuro más sostenible.
Por eso Sure We Can está haciendo mucho este Día de la Tierra, ¡presentando muchas actividades terrosas en que puedes involucrarte! El Día de la Tierra lo mismo, el martes el 22 de Abril, empezando a las 11 de la mañana, estaremos haciendo una limpieza de las calles sobre nuestro sitio primero en la calle McKibbin, y también un lonche compartido conseguido por plantando semillas y clasificando botellas y latas. Puedes ayudarnos a hacer el barrio más hermoso, apoyar al trabajo de los recicladores, y volver por hogar con una plantita tuya ¡todo en un día! El miércoles 23, voy a estar en un panel dirigido por la Congresista Yvette Clarke sobre el tema de sostenibilidad en Brooklyn College. The Day is Here!!

March 1st is International Recyclers’ Day–a day when we honor the loss of 11 independent recyclers in a massacre in Colombia in 1992, and when we insist on the value of this work and the people who do it. This year’s celebration is special for us. On Saturday, we will open our brand new redemption center in East New York, Brooklyn!
For years, we’ve cherished the hope that our unique working model–fusing the practical labor of collecting and recycling bottles and cans with worker education and organizing, community development, public health outreach, arts programs, mutual aid, and advocacy–can be replicated in other places, other neighborhoods, other cities. Seeing if we can replicate it ourselves is the first step to creating a framework others across the country or world can follow! It’s also the culmination of our work of empowerment, as our dear friend and President of AIR-NYC prepares to take the reins of her own redemption center!
We’ve got a lot to celebrate, and we want to do it with our allies who have stood by us through so many obstacles and tribulations. If you’re available, please join us on Saturday, between 11am and 2pm, at 1762 East New York Ave in Brooklyn. It’s easy to get there–just take the L train to Broadway Junction. We’ll be gathering together and hearing remarks from elected officials and others who care about this work and community, including local Council Member Sandy Nurse, State Senator Julia Salazar, and Assemblymember Emily Gallagher. We’ll hear about the critical importance of expanding the Bottle Bill. After the speakers, we’ll observe the first ceremonial redemption of bottles and cans, and then enjoy refreshments together. Join us as we honor all that canners have accomplished, and all the successes still to come!

El día 1 de Marzo es el Día Internacional de los Recicladores–un día en que honramos la pérdida de 11 recicladores independientes en un masacre en Colombia en 1992, y en qué insistimos en el valor de este trabajo y los que lo hacen. La celebración de este año es especial para nosotros. El sábado, ¡abrimos nuestro nuevo centro de reciclaje en East New York, Brooklyn!
Durante años, hemos guardado la esperanza que nuestro modelo único de trabajar–juntando el labor de recogiendo y reciclando las botellas y latas con enseñando y organizando con los trabajadores, el desarrollo comunitario, salud pública, programas de arte, ayuda mutual, y abogacía–puede ser replicado en otros lugares, otros barrios, otras ciudades. ¡Ver si podemos replicar nosotros mismos es el primer paso haciendo un ejemplo que otros en todo el país o todo el mundo pueden conseguir! A Chance to Leave Your Mark on Sure We Can!

We’re on the cusp of a huge milestone: on March 1st, we will open our first ever Sure We Can expansion redemption center! We’ve dreamed of this for years, and it’s a little overwhelming to finally be on the threshold. We’re working hard to get the space ready: buying and installing containers and equipment and making repairs. There is, however, a key element still outstanding–we need to make the space beautiful, inviting, and inspiring. For that, we’re asking for your help and participation!
We’re using some of the funds you helped us raise last year to hire Artolution, a wonderful organization that works with marginalized folks across the world to express their often-underheard stories through art. They collaborate with communities to make beautiful murals and other works of public art. They helped us paint our van! They’ll be with us at the new site–1762 East New York Ave–this Saturday, February 22nd, from 11am till 5pm, helping transform three drab shipping containers into vibrant, functional artworks. Our Shared Voice
Dear friend,
I’ve struggled for a couple weeks to find something compassionate and compelling to say about the new year, but frankly I’ve been at a loss. What could I possibly say that hasn’t already been said about intense fires or intense cold, or about intense dysfunction or intense fear? How can I avoid reducing this ferocious reality into numbing platitudes?
Silence is not an option, but rhetoric alone is not enough. I need to channel my energy and voice into action, or all the fear and fury and resentment at injustice will simply submerge me. So, in the absence of anything novel to say, I will direct what I have at those who need to hear it. I am not powerless, despite what those who covet power may wish. When I stand together with those who feel compassion and who envision a better world, that power is magnified. Platitudes or not, that shared voice is real. And I still believe–I have to believe–that that voice can chip away, little by little, at the imposing but brittle structures of chaos and fear that overshadow us.
I’ve said this before–this is not abstract. Sure We Can is once again diving into the fray in Albany to fight to raise the New York beverage deposit on which canners depend from 5c to 10c. This change would not be superficial. It would give canners–workers who power the state’s most effective recycling system, and who currently earn less than a third of minimum wage–their first raise in more than 40 years. It would continue to reduce the proliferation of unsightly litter in already-overburdened environmental justice communities, and it would contribute to the success of our state’s currently-imperiled sustainability goals. The wall in our way is one of political will, and only political will can break it. If you live in New York, I urge you to call your state representatives now and insist that they pass the Bigger Better Bottle Bill this year!

He luchado durante dos semanas buscando alguna cosa compasionada o interesante que decir sobre el año nuevo, pero de verdad no tengo nada. ¿Que puedo decir que ya no ha sido dicho sobre fuegos intensos o frío intenso, o sobre disfunción intensa o miedo intenso? ¿Cómo puedo evitar reducir esta realidad feroz en tópicos entumecidos?
La silencia no es una opción, pero las palabras no son suficientes. Necesito dirigir la energía mia y mi voz a la acción, o todo el miedo y furia y resentimiento contra la injusticia va a sumergirme. Entonces, sin algo nuevo que decir, voy a dirigir lo que tengo a los que necesitan escucharlo. No soy sin poder, no importa lo que quieren los que codician al poder. Cuándo yo paro junto con los que sienten compasión y creen en un mundo mejor, ese poder se magnifica. Tópicos o no, esta voz compartida es real. Todavía yo creo–necesito crear–que esta voz puede desportillar, poco a poco, a las estructuras imponentes pero quebradizas de miedo y caos que nos ensombrecen.
Ya lo he dicho–esto no es abstracto. Sure We Can está zambullendo otra vez en la lucha en Albany de crecer el depósito de bebidas en qué dependen los recicladores desde las 5c hasta las 10c. Este cambio no es superficial. Lo daría a recicladores–trabajadores que han propulsado el sistema de reciclar más efectivo en el estado, y que ahora ganan de promedio menos que un tercio del salario mínimo–su primer aumento en más de 40 años. Continuaría reduciendo la proliferación de basura fea en comunidades de justicia medioambiental que ya están sobrecargadas, y contribuiría a las metas sostenibles del estado que son ponidos en peligro. La pared en nuestro camino es una de voluntad política, y la voluntad política es la única cosa que puede romperla. 2025, Unaccountably
Dear friend,
2025 is almost here, and with your help we met and even surpassed our goal to raise $30,000 to open our new redemption center! Thank you so much to those who have contributed!!
The changing year always fills me with an almost unaccountable sense of possibility, even in the face of so many anxious or even disturbing unknowns in the year to come. I like to acknowledge the cycle of transformation and renewal, and affirm my belief that as that cycle manifests in nature, so it can in culture and society. Nothing lasts–things decay and fall apart, and things sprout and grow. It’s silly to cling onto the scraps of an idealized past, and absurd to deny the possibility of a future beyond what we can imagine.
That future is what Sure We Can is all about! Our response to fear of the future is to strike out and meet it boldly, by shouting out our values, and by pushing forward practically with initiatives, campaigns, and experiments. All those principles combine in this project, the opening of our first satellite redemption center in East New York, led by longtime canner and AIR-NYC President Josefa Marín. Though we’ve met our fundraising goal, we’re pushing out into the unknown! Any further support will help us pay staff to support Josefa, buy extra or more reliable equipment, and beautify the space. If you haven’t yet, please consider making a tax-deductible donation before the end of 2024!

Es una tontería se aferra a las sobras de un pasado idealizado, y absurdo que niega la posibilidad de un futuro más que podemos imaginar.
¡Este futuro es el tema de todas las cosas en Sure We Can! Nuestra respuesta al miedo del futuro es para ir y encontrarlo resueltamente, por gritar nuestros valores, y por empujar adelante prácticamente con iniciativas, campañas, y experimentos. Happy Holidays from Sure We Can!

No matter what, if anything, you’re celebrating this time of year, I hope you are warm, safe, and close with those you love. I’m a big believer in the idea that the things that are typically regarded on a cultural level as challenging and valuable, like rapid or massive achievements and intense productivity, are actually more automatic and easier, in a way, than taking stops or pauses, taking your time, and making the space that’s needed in your mind and life to be able to be present and really care for others. So, this holiday season, I challenge you to chill, and to have fun! Certainly, there’s work to do–there always will be. Let’s get ready to do it by celebrating what we can and living (and resting) as fully as possible!
We’ve made incredible progress on our end-of-year fundraiser to support the opening of our new redemption center in East New York. We’re less than $500 away from our $30,000 goal, with 8 days left in the year to donate. You can help us reach our goal, and beyond!! Preparamos para hacer el trabajo por celebrar lo que podemos y vivir (y descansar) lo más posible!

There's Still Hope for 2024

If you, like me, are looking for a way to end 2024 and enter 2025 on a note of evolution and possibility, you’re in luck! There’s so much incredible work happening–the people who are determined to counter fear and hatred with creativity and compassion are mobilizing, and whether you’re interested in political action, mutual aid, art, technology, or any other thing, there’s a community out there waiting to welcome you into the effort to build a more sustainable culture.
We’re proud to be a small part of that effort at Sure We Can. We’re gearing up now to return to Albany for the 2025 legislative session, and finally pass the Bigger Better Bottle Bill! We got closer than ever last session, and this year it’s time to seal the deal. That also means our opponents in Bottle Bill expansion, including giants like Coke and Pepsi, are more determined than ever to stop us. We’re asking everyone who recognizes what a higher deposit would mean for New York’s canners–namely, a step toward decent remuneration and recognition for their decades of work–to join us in demanding the law be changed! This week, we’re sending a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul insisting that she include the bill in her executive budget. If you’re a New Yorker, sign on!
We’ve also made great headway in our campaign to raise funds to open our new redemption center in East New York, Brooklyn, and create an unprecedented space for canners in that neighborhood–but we’re not there yet. A Chance to Give!

It’s Giving Tuesday! Today, whether or not you put stock in these kinds of “holidays,” we all have an opportunity–or even an excuse–to contribute to something. Even just to consider the possibility of a contribution and where your contribution might make the most difference is meaningful; to actually take the leap and contribute to a project or organization that is doing work that resonates with you is huge. In an organization that depends on these types of contributions, it can mean the difference between a program shuttering or continuing. For the communities that depend on those organizations, it can mean the difference between suffering and support.
If you choose to support Sure We Can this Giving Tuesday, you will, first, be helping us to open our new redemption center, and to make it as beautiful and welcoming as possible. This will in turn help us reach out to more NYC canners, and both meet their existing needs and empower them to imagine and pursue solutions to the larger and more systemic challenges they face. This strengthens the community’s ability to raise its voice and influence law- and policy-makers, and thereby improve conditions not only for themselves, but for all marginalized New Yorkers, and our communities at large. Gratitude In Participation
Dear friend,
In moments of stress and transition, gratitude can be pretty elusive. When I’m preoccupied with global-scale problems and endless hypothetical catastrophes, there’s very little space in my mind for what’s actually working well in the moment, and what’s actually possible. When I do have that space, I often experience gratitude just for the simple sensation of being present and letting go of my nagging anxious thoughts. The question, then, is how is that space created? For me, usually, the answer is constructive participation. Participating open-heartedly in almost anything can support this movement, whether it’s organizing or engaging in large-scale action, spending time with your friends and loved ones, or even just participating in the moment by being conscious of your breath, your heartbeat, your sensations. Constructive participation is cultivating a relationship with others and with reality, to accept both its constraints and inspirations. I think this type of participation is at the root of all the things in life that matter and last.
At Sure We Can, we strive to support constructive participation by any person, at any level. That might mean just working as a canner and supporting yourself through recycling. It might mean coming to volunteer during one of our planned activities, like the one coming up on December 7th, to meet canners, learn about their work, and get a taste of it for yourself. It might mean participating in the Bottle Bill campaign and joining us as we hold our leaders and elected officials accountable. It could mean simply reading this letter, or it could mean contributing to or sharing our campaign to raise funds to open our new redemption center in East New York.
It’s time for Thanksgiving, and this year’s Giving Tuesday, and all the baggage and pressure those holidays entail. There are lots of things to participate in this weekend–good food, good company, family joys and family tensions, consumerism and charity. It’s up to each of us to discern what’s constructive and what isn’t, what makes us feel trapped by our own fears and expectations, and what allows us to gratefully release them. The fraught history of Thanksgiving and its fraught present challenge us to reflect on the possibilities of gratitude in this moment, not any other. This Giving Tuesday and beyond, I know you’ll find a way to participate, in ways big and small, in creating a more sustainable future. If you choose to do that with or through Sure We Can, you have my eternal gratitude.

En momentos de estrés y transiciones, el agradecimiento puede ser difícil de encontrar. Cuándo estoy preocupado con problemas del mundo y catástrofes hipotéticas sinfín, no hay espacio en mi mente para lo que está pasando bien por el momento, yo lo que es posible de verdad. Cuándo yo tengo este espacio, muchas veces tengo la experiencia de agradecimiento solo por la sensación de estar presente y dejar los pensamientos pesados. La pregunta, entonces, es ¿cómo está hecho este espacio? Para mi, usualmente, la respuesta es la participación constructiva. Participando con corazón abierto en cualquier cosa puede apoyar este movimiento, no importa si es organizar o realizar una acción grande, pasar tiempo con tus amigos o queridos, o solo participar en el momento por ser consciente de tu respiración, tu latido, tus sensaciones. La participación constructiva es cultivar una relación entre tú y los demás y con la realidad, es aceptar las restricciones e inspiraciones juntos. Creo que este tipo de participación está por la funda de cada cosa en la vida que dura y importa.
En Sure We Can, tratamos de apoyar la participación constructiva de cada uno, en cualquier nivel. Puede significar trabajando como reciclador y ganando por reciclar. Puede significar llegar para ofrecerte en una de nuestras actividades planeadas, como la que viene el 7 de diciembre, para conocer a algunos recicladores, aprender sobre su trabajo, y tratar tu mismo. Puede significar participando en nuestra campaña de crecer la ley de envases y uniendo con nosotros de hacer que se responsabilice nuestros líderes y oficiales electos. Puede significar solo leyendo esta carta, o puede significar contribuyendo o compartiendo nuestra campaña para recaudar fondos para hacer nuestro centro nuevo en East New York.
Es tiempo para el Día de Acción de Gracias, y el Martes de Dar de este año, con todo el bagaje y presión que estas fiestas tienen. Hay muchas cosas en que una persona puede participar este fin de semana–comida buena, compañía buena, alegría de la familia y tensiones de la familia, consumismo y la caridad. Depende de cada uno para entender lo que es constructivo y lo que no es, lo que nos hace sentir atrapados por nuestros miedos y expectativas, y lo que nos permite dejarlos con agradecimiento. La historia difícil del Día de Acción de Gracias y el presente también difícil nos llaman a reflejarnos en las posibilidades de este momento, y nada otro. Este Marte de Dar y más allá, yo sé que vas a encontrar una oportunidad de participar, en manera grande o pequeña, en hacer un futuro más sostenible. Anxiety and Beyond
Dear friend,
There’s a lot of anxiety floating around right now. New York City has this special quality where it can feel like all eight million people are sharing a kind of vast collective emotional experience, and when that experience contains stress and fear for the future, it can get pretty intense. It can also feel like you’re carrying around emotions that aren’t totally your own, and that can’t be completely understood. That lack of understanding can be scary in itself, and make it hard to express or share your feelings, even with others who may be feeling basically the same thing. At the same time, we know that New Yorkers are capable of collective experiences of incredible joy, solidarity, and transformation. So what makes the difference between one and the other, beyond just reacting to the vicissitudes of national or global events beyond our control as individuals?
I think what matters is being available to others, which in the end means accepting that part of other people that, like the future, will always be unknown to us. Through simply being with others, the terrible hold of anxiety can be dispelled, making it possible–sometimes very suddenly–to face the unknowns of the future with love and grace, instead of fear. I think this attitude is cherished by Sure We Can’s values and the community that has formed around them, and is exemplified in no one better than Josefa Marín, the President of the Alliance of Independent Recyclers of New York City (AIR-NYC), and the canner who will lead our satellite expansion in 2025. She has faced so many unknowns–geographical, political, medical, personal–and has at every step drawn strength from those alongside her. Today she’s preparing without fear to cross a new threshold, into the realm of entrepreneurship and management. She’ll need her community to stand beside her and support her! Hay mucha ansiedad flotante ahora. La Ciudad Nueva York tiene esta calidad especial que puede sentir como todos los ocho millones de personas en la ciudad están compartiendo una experiencia emocional enorme, y cuándo esta experiencia tiene estrés y miedo para el futuro, puede ser muy intenso. Puede también sentir cómo estás cargando emociones que no son tus propios, y que no pueden ser entendidos completamente. Esa falta de entender puede ser de miedo lo mismo, y hacer duro expresar o compartir los sentimientos, también con los que tal vez sienten lo mismo. A la misma vez, sabemos que los Neoyorquinos pueden tener experiencias colectivas de alegría increíble, solidaridad, y transformación. Entonces qué hace la diferencia entre uno a otro, ¿más que responder a los tribulaciones de eventos nacionales o mundial que no podemos controlar como individuos?
Yo creo que lo que importa es ser disponible a los demás, que significa al final aceptar la parte de los otros que, como el futuro, siempre no podemos saber. A través del simple hecho de estar juntos, el control terrible de la ansiedad puede ser disipada, haciendo posible–a veces de pronto–enfrentar lo que no sabemos en el futuro con amor y gracia, en lugar de miedo. Creo que este sentimiento es apreciado por los valores de Sure We Can ya la comunidad que se ha formado sobre ellos, y que es ejemplificado más que nadie en Josefa Marín, la Presidenta de la Alianza de Recicladores Independientes de la Ciudad Nueva York (AIR-NYC), ya la recicladora que va a liderar nuestra expansión al satélite en 2025. Ella ha enfrentado tantas cosas que no sabía o entendía–geográficas, políticas, médicas, y personales–y ha en cada paso dibujada fuerza por los que le han acompañado. Hoy, ella se está preparando para cruzar al nuevo lado sin miedo, al reino del espíritu emprendedor y manejar. ¡Necesitará toda la comunidad pararse con ella para apoyar!
