Our Essential Services! Two Weeks Left to Help!
Dear friend,
Since I last wrote to you, we’ve made some great strides in our effort to raise $30,000 before the end of the year to maintain our staffing and programs in 2026. We’re less than $6000 away from our goal, with only two weeks left! To those who have donated and helped us get this far, thank you so much–we’re incredibly grateful. For those who are still sitting on the fence, the time is now! Help us keep this unique work alive!
Usually when I want to convey to someone how meaningful Sure We Can’s work is, I invite them to tour our main site in East Williamsburg. It occurs to me that many of you may not have had that opportunity, so I thought I’d share with you a bit about the special programs we offer, that we’re so invested in continuing in the coming year.
At Sure We Can, we…
- Offer extra income to canners if they count and sort their own bottles, meaning they can earn up to 20% more here than other redemption centers;
- Provide onsite space for canners to count and sort, protected from the elements–an extreme rarity for workers who usually have to wait on the street to be served by other redemption centers;
- Offer onsite storage where canners can stow bottles and cans in between visits, letting them more easily access the extra payment for sorted materials, as well as have more agency over their work by having a secure place to store materials;
- Host meetings, workshops, trainings, activities, and celebrations that bring the community together, create contexts for organizing, activism, organic interaction, and cultural engagement that would be otherwise extremely hard to find;
- Run outreach programs to provide canners with reliable information on public health, supportive resources, or their rights;
- Create workforce development opportunities for canners to work wage-paying jobs that they can supplement with bottle-and-can income;
- Present cultural events like, concerts, plays, and exhibitions from artists where canners and the broader local community can encounter each other and together share, learn, and grow.
There is no other redemption center in New York that offers any of these services. If we are forced to reduce or retract a service, canners won’t be able to find it anywhere else. That’s why we’re working so hard to raise this money, and that’s why we need your help! If you haven’t yet, please consider giving today!

If Not Us, Then Who?

We are almost halfway to meeting our goal to raise $30,000 before the end of the year in order to sustain staffing and programs in the coming year. Thank you so much to those who’ve already contributed!
These end-of-year nonprofit fundraisers are ubiquitous and may seem arbitrary, but let me assure you that this year, it’s urgently specific and real. Like many nonprofits working on social, economic, or climate justice efforts, we’ve felt the pinch of a shifting ideological atmosphere. It’s not just a change in tone—we’ve had funders back out of multi-year programs, grinding to a halt years-long community projects and leaving us with a $65,000 gap in 2026. At the same time, as we go another year without Bottle Bill expansion, participation in New York’s program is deteriorating; the 5 cent deposit value simply doesn’t cut it. Canners also have to work while navigating a culture that’s increasingly hostile to them—many are unable to leave their homes to work due to fear. The result is less redemption activity overall, leading to a drop of over $100,000 in our annual recycling revenue.
We’re fortunate to have had funders who are committed to our mission and who have helped us ameliorate some of these challenges, but it’s just not enough to grow, or even hold steady—grant approval processes are slower and more competitive than ever. This threatens the health of our unique programs that can’t be found anywhere else in New York, like community-sensitive redemption; canner engagement, outreach, and resource connection; and our critical effort to expand the Bottle Bill and create better systemic conditions for canners.
We need grassroots support to fill the gaps that institutions are creating through caution or cowardice and keep this work going—we need you! It was community power and community resources that began our mission and it will be the same things that help us keep moving forward. If this work means anything to you, please give!

Freezin for a Reason
Dear friend,
My first job in New York City was canvassing for Planned Parenthood, between November of 2012 and April of 2013. I spent my first winter in NYC asking strangers on the street to support women’s health care–an immersive and grueling way to get to know the city and the overwhelming variety of people and opinions within it. Our tagline on particularly frigid days was, “We’re freezin’ for a reason!” I always seemed to find more success on those days–when conditions were more intense, it somehow became easier to do hard, principled work authentically. I think about those early cold weeks a lot, as the days outside darken, but also as the conditions in our culture continue to intensify. I think there’s something inherently energizing and human about rising to a challenge.
Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday 2025! It’s cold outside, but we’ve got some invigorating challenges to which you can rise. For the truly intrepid, join us onsite at Sure We Can for a volunteer activity sorting bottles and cans tomorrow between 11a and 1p. If that feels like too much for you, stop by for a brisk tour. And if you can’t make it out, there’s an even more accessible option–you can contribute to our end-of-year fundraiser, and help us raise $30,000 to maintain our staffing and programs in 2026. We’re under threat from neglected environmental policy, downturns in institutional giving, and poisonous public sentiment turned against immigrants, the environment, and all sorts of vital progressive causes. The challenges are immense–and so are the opportunities to rise to them!

Mi primer trabajo en la Ciudad Nueva York fue hacer campaña para Planned Parenthood, entre noviembre de 2012 y abril de 2013. Yo pasaba mi primer invierno en NYC pidiendo a extraños que apoyaran a la cuidad de salud de mujeres–una manera inmersiva y dura de conocer a la ciudad y la variedad enorme de personas y opiniones adentro la. Nuestra frase en los días más fríos fue, “¡Estamos frisando por una razón!” Siempre encontraba más éxito en esos días–cuándo las condiciones eran más intensas, parecía más fácil que hacer trabajo duro y de principios con autenticidad. Simple Gratitude
Dear friend,
It feels like the world has spun around more than a few times since last Thanksgiving. It’s harder than ever to make a general sense of gratitude feel authentic–platitudes wilt in the face of the dismaying realities that assault us daily. If we aren’t to be lost in frustration, cynicism, and despair, the call to meaningfully reflect on and cultivate gratitude is very urgent. For me, the holiday of Thanksgiving presents an opportunity to simplify this effort, to find gratitude in small, real things, like being present with the people I care about, contemplating the renovation and renewal that comes with the waning of the year, and celebrating the pure sustenance of life and conviviality in sharing good food with others. I experience this as a kind of antidote to both the history of extraction and violence that goes with the holiday, and the ways that that history continues in our current time of trial.
Now’s also the time that end-of-year fundraising for organizations like ours begins in earnest, and the platitudes start pouring out in full force. We’re certainly not immune to this–we need financial support just like every other nonprofit, and we’re not shy about it. Still, when it comes to considering which of the many worthy and necessary causes in the world that could be supported, I like to think that Sure We Can can offer some measure of that same feet-on-the-ground simplicity. If you choose to support us with a donation before the end of the year, no matter the size, you will be participating in not just a generalized movement to transform culture, but the actual improvement of hundreds of workers’ day-to-day lives by providing access to those simple but vital things which can create enormous gratitude–community, sustenance, and growth. If you are able, I urge you to join us in helping raise $30,000 before the end of 2025 to fill gaps in our budget created by continued neglect of the Bottle Bill by lawmakers and drastic drops in institutional giving by funders. This simple support matters now more than ever.
This coming Tuesday, December 2nd, is “Giving Tuesday,” a great day to make a financial contribution, but also a great day to keep your feet on the ground and participate in something simply real, like the volunteer activity we’re hosting at Sure We Can, where you can help us count and sort bottles and cans as well as meet the canners we serve and like-minded allies–a chance to make a concrete offering and to build the community and sense of possibility that forms the container of that simple, all-important, gratitude. While I believe it will take more than gratitude for us to find our way through these dark days, I’m certain that without it, we’re already lost.

Siente cómo el mundo ha vuelto más que algunas veces desde el último Día de Acción de Gracias. Es más difícil que nada hacer un sentimiento general de agradecimiento sentir auténtico–los lugares comunes se marchitan de enfrentar las realidades duras que nos atacan diariamente. Si no queremos ser perdidos en la frustración, el cinismo, y la desesperación, la llamada para reflejarnos con intención y cultivar el agradecimiento tiene mucha urgencia. Para mi, la fiesta del Día de Acción de Gracias ofrece una oportunidad que simplificar este esfuerzo, y encontrar el agradecimiento en cosas pequeñas y reales, cómo ser presente con las personas a quien yo cuido, contemplar la renovación que pasa en acabar el año, y celebrar la subsistencia de la vida y lo cordial de compartir comida buena con los demás. Yo experimento esto cómo una antidota contra la historia de extracción y violencia que tiene la fiesta, y las maneras en que esta historia sigue en nuestro tiempo duro.
Ahora también es el tiempo de empezar a recaudar fondos a fin de año para organizaciones como nosotros, y en que los lugares comunes vienen con fuerza llena. No somos inmunes contra esto–necesitamos apoyo financiero y no somos tímidos de esto. Todavía, de considerar cuál de las causas importantes y valiosas en el mundo que alguien puede apoyar, me gusta pensar que Sure We Can puede ofrecer una parte de esta simplicidad. Si eliges en apoyarnos con una donación antes que fin del año, no importa el tamaño, puede participar no solo en un movimiento generalizado de cambiar la cultura, pero también en mejorar directamente las vidas de cientos de trabajadores por dar acceso en esas cosas simples pero necesarias que puede hacer agradecimiento enorme–comunidad, subsistencia, y crecencia. The Future Is Ours To Shape

Today, New York City woke up to the smell of political transformation in the air, carrying with it the idea that a door may be opening to a new sense of atmosphere and emphasis; one where community concerns, and the lives of real people, are prioritized. The narrow interests and the cruel and inflexible demands of the extractor class that tries at every turn to neutralize New Yorkers’ capacities to dream of and demand a better future are weakening. The people’s will to shape that future on their terms has had real consequences. It remains to be seen how all this will play out, but today we can enjoy that heady sense of possibility!
If you, like me, are inspired by recent events and want to contribute to the important work to come, there’s no time like the present to get involved! Why not join the lobbying webinar being presented tonight at 7pm by NYPIRG and the Bigger Better Bottle Bill coalition? We’ll be talking about how to advocate to lawmakers about the issues that matter to you, and especially about expanding the New York State Bottle Bill to be more effective and supportive. Climate Week is Here!

It’s been a little while… I hope you enjoyed your summer! In addition to hitting the beach and perfecting our tans, we spent the season processing the legislature’s failure to expand the Bottle Bill in June, fortifying our systems for protecting our community against institutional disinvestment and growing stigma against marginalized people, as well as repairing and improving our sites to be more inviting and ready to host more cool events!
Despite Sure We Can navigating the same choppy cultural waters as many organizations and civic-minded people who care about real people and doing good work, we are excited about the future and more committed than ever to our mission of uplifting canners, who remain some of the hardest-working and least-recognized New Yorkers. We’ve got volunteer activities and a Climate Week event coming up! At the same time, we’re gearing up to push even harder in the coming months for a more sustainable, supportive framework for canners through the Bigger, Better Bottle Bill. So, there’s a lot going on that you can get involved in!
First, we have an opportunity for folks all across New York State to dive into the Bottle Bill campaign: we’re trying to get a better understanding of how thorough the state and Governor Hochul are in enforcing the existing law–our theory is, they are not very thorough! To put some facts behind our feeling, we’ve devised a way for volunteers to help us hold the state accountable, and in which anyone in New York can participate super easily! If you’re interested, join us this coming Monday, September 22nd, for a Zoom call in which we’ll go through the whole process and get you started!
This coming week is also Climate Week in New York City! There’re tons of awesome events going on, but we hope you can join us for a happy hour at the Sure We Can headquarters on McKibbin St in Brooklyn on Wednesday, September 24th, at 7pm! We’ll be showing the space and discussing how we can work together to build sustainable urban culture, supported by drinks and good company. We’d love to see you!
You can also join us this Friday at 10am for a volunteer activity to count and sort redeemables, and learn through direct experience what it takes to responsibly handle the vast amount of recyclable material our city generates.

Ha pasado algún tiempo… ¡Espero que hayas disfrutado de tu verano! Además de ir a la playa y llegando al bronceado perfecto, usemos la estación en procesar el fracaso de la legislatura de crecer la Ley de Envases, fortalecendo a nuestros sistemas para proteger nuestra comunidad contra la desinvirtiendo institucional y estigma creciendo contra las personas marginalizadas, y ¡también reparando y mejorando nuestros sitios para ser más acogedores y listos para presentar eventos geniales!
Aunque Sure We Can está navegando las mismas aguas turbulentas de cultura que otras organizaciones y personas que tienen mente para la vida cívica y les importan las personas reales y el trabajo bueno, estamos emocionados por la futura y somos más fijos en cometer a nuestra misión que apoyar a los recicladores, que todavía son algunos de los ques trabajan más fuertemente con menos reconocimiento. ¡Tenemos actividades de voluntad y un evento de la Semana Climática llegando! Summertime at SWC
Dear friend,
I hope you’re staying cool–but if you like the heat, I’ve got a treat for you! For those among you who won’t let a little weather stop you from contributing to sustainable culture, we’re hosting a volunteer event tomorrow at our McKibbin St site from 10am to 12pm. Join us for bottle and can sorting, and to fortify our local trees with some rich soil in their planters!
We’re also cooking up more fun events before the summer is over, including tours and mixers where you can get to know the organization and the people who give it life a little better. We’re hosting another rock show in September! We’ll be striving to offer as much fun stuff as possible, not to mention opportunities to get involved in advocacy as the legislative season heats up once more. Whatever your entry point to the world of sustainability, we’ll have something for you to enjoy–we look forward to seeing you at Sure We Can!

The Waste Commons and more!
Dear friend,
I hope this finds you well and staying cool! If you’re sweltering in New York City and need some distraction from the heat, Sure We Can has got you covered!
First, join us this coming Wednesday, July 9, at 730pm, for a special screening of The Waste Commons, a documentary directed by Rosalind Fredericks, focusing on the work and lives of waste pickers in Senegal. Canners in New York City are just one example of a worldwide phenomenon: marginalized workers earning a living by handling and repurposing the stuff that other people just throw away. This film will help us understand this worldwide context and create solidarity between our community and others around the world who share similar circumstances and struggles. I hope to see you there!
We’re also hosting an e-waste recycling event in collaboration with the LES Ecology Center and our Council Member, Jen Gutiérrez, on Saturday, July 12, from 10am till 2pm, at our McKibbin Street site. Here’s your chance to constructively dispose of those pesky computers, printers, and other electronics that are so hard to recycle!

Primero, únete con nosotros este miércoles que viene, el 9 de julio, a las 730 de la tarde, para una presentación especial de El Ejido de Residuos, un documental dirigido por Rosalind Fredericks, enfocado en el trabajo y las vidas de recicladores en Senegal. Recicladores en NYC son solo un ejemplo de un fenómeno mundial: trabajadores marginalizados ganando una vida recogiendo y haciendo de nuevo las cosas que otros tiran. Esta película nos ayudará a entender este contexto mundial y hacer solidaridad entre nuestra comunidad y los otros en el mundo que tienen situaciones y desafíos similares. ¡Espero verte por allá!
También presentamos un evento de reciclar la basura electrónica en colaboración con el Centro de Ecología de LES, y nuestra Miembra del Consejo Municipal, Jen Gutiérrez, el sábado el 12 de julio, desde las 10 de la mañana hasta las 2 de la tarde, en nuestro sitio en la calle McKibbin. ¡Es una oportunidad para tirar sus cosas electrónicas como computadores o impresoras que son difíciles de reciclar de una manera buena!

Riven Closes This Week!

I hope this finds you well, and if you’re in NYC or any of the other parts of the US suffering from intense heat–stay cool and stay safe!
I’m just sending a quick note to remind you that there are two more performances of Riven, the unique theatrical experience conceived and directed by Marina Zurita and drawn from interviews with real waste pickers in Brazil and NYC! The show closes on Friday, but there are still tickets available. I saw it on opening night and I’ll be back this week–the show is emotionally complex and visually exciting and I’m eager to see it again. I’ll be at both the Thursday and Friday performances, so if you’re in the city, come through and say hi, and check out this meaningful and transformative artwork!

Solo estoy enviando este correo rápido para avisarte que todavía hay dos presentaciones más del Riven, la única obra de teatro que ha imaginado y dirigido Marina Zurita, y ¡hecho por entrevistas con recicladores reales en Brasil y NYC! La obra cierra el viernes, pero todavía hay boletos disponibles. Yo la ví la noche de apertura pero vuelvo esta semana–la obra tiene complejidad emocional y es visualmente emocionante, y estoy emocionado de verla otra vez. Voy a estar en las presentaciones de jueves y viernes, entonces si estás en la ciudad, te llegas y decir una hola, y ¡también ver esta obra de arte significante y transformativa!

Riven Opens Tonight!
Dear friend,
Tonight is opening night of Riven, a new play created by NYC-based theater artist Marina Zurita and her exciting team of collaborators, from stories and interviews with waste pickers in her native Brazil as well as here in NYC. I’m personally very proud to be presenting this piece, first because it’s an opportunity to uplift a work that centers and explores the voices and stories of our unique community that are so often hidden, and second because my relationship with Sure We Can began through my theater practice, and it feels right to pay that forward and continue to make space for art and performance in our community. We hope to keep this rolling and share more awesome performance and culture with you in the coming months and years–watch this space!
Tickets for tonight’s opening of Riven are sold out, but there’s still plenty of space for the rest of the run, which will last until June 27th!
Also, if you can’t make it to the show this weekend but still want to spend some time at Sure We Can and engage with our work and community, we’re having a counting and sorting volunteer activity this Saturday, June 14th. Esta noche es la apertura de Riven, una nueva obra de teatro hecha por la artista de teatro basada en NYC Marina Zurita y su equipo de colaboradores, de historias y entrevistas con recicladores en su país, Brasil, y también aquí en NYC. Personalmente estoy tan orgulloso que presentar este obra, porque es una oportunidad que compartir una obra que enfoca y explora las voces y historias de nuestra comunidad única que muchas veces son escondidas, y también porque mi relación con Sure We Can empezó por mi practico de teatro, y siente bien que seguir haciendo espacio para arte y performancia en nuestra comunidad. Esperemos que el programa siga y podamos compartir más presentaciones increíbles contigo en los meses y años que vienen–¡ver este espacio!
No hay más boletos para la apertura de Riven esta noche, pero todavía hay mucho espacio para las otras fechas, y sigue la obra hasta el 27 de junio!
