The Waste Commons and more!

I hope this finds you well and staying cool! If you’re sweltering in New York City and need some distraction from the heat, Sure We Can has got you covered!

First, join us this coming Wednesday, July 9, at 730pm, for a special screening of The Waste Commons, a documentary directed by Rosalind Fredericks, focusing on the work and lives of waste pickers in Senegal. Canners in New York City are just one example of a worldwide phenomenon: marginalized workers earning a living by handling and repurposing the stuff that other people just throw away. This film will help us understand this worldwide context and create solidarity between our community and others around the world who share similar circumstances and struggles. I hope to see you there!

We’re also hosting an e-waste recycling event in collaboration with the LES Ecology Center and our Council Member, Jen Gutiérrez, on Saturday, July 12, from 10am till 2pm, at our McKibbin Street site. Here’s your chance to constructively dispose of those pesky computers, printers, and other electronics that are so hard to recycle!

Primero, únete con nosotros este miércoles que viene, el 9 de julio, a las 730 de la tarde, para una presentación especial de El Ejido de Residuos, un documental dirigido por Rosalind Fredericks, enfocado en el trabajo y las vidas de recicladores en Senegal. Recicladores en NYC son solo un ejemplo de un fenómeno mundial: trabajadores marginalizados ganando una vida recogiendo y haciendo de nuevo las cosas que otros tiran. Esta película nos ayudará a entender este contexto mundial y hacer solidaridad entre nuestra comunidad y los otros en el mundo que tienen situaciones y desafíos similares. ¡Espero verte por allá!

También presentamos un evento de reciclar la basura electrónica en colaboración con el Centro de Ecología de LES, y nuestra Miembra del Consejo Municipal, Jen Gutiérrez, el sábado el 12 de julio, desde las 10 de la mañana hasta las 2 de la tarde, en nuestro sitio en la calle McKibbin. ¡Es una oportunidad para tirar sus cosas electrónicas como computadores o impresoras que son difíciles de reciclar de una manera buena!
