Simple Gratitude

Dear friend,

It feels like the world has spun around more than a few times since last Thanksgiving. It’s harder than ever to make a general sense of gratitude feel authentic–platitudes wilt in the face of the dismaying realities that assault us daily. If we aren’t to be lost in frustration, cynicism, and despair, the call to meaningfully reflect on and cultivate gratitude is very urgent. For me, the holiday of Thanksgiving presents an opportunity to simplify this effort, to find gratitude in small, real things, like being present with the people I care about, contemplating the renovation and renewal that comes with the waning of the year, and celebrating the pure sustenance of life and conviviality in sharing good food with others. I experience this as a kind of antidote to both the history of extraction and violence that goes with the holiday, and the ways that that history continues in our current time of trial.

Now’s also the time that end-of-year fundraising for organizations like ours begins in earnest, and the platitudes start pouring out in full force. We’re certainly not immune to this–we need financial support just like every other nonprofit, and we’re not shy about it. Still, when it comes to considering which of the many worthy and necessary causes in the world that could be supported, I like to think that Sure We Can can offer some measure of that same feet-on-the-ground simplicity. If you choose to support us with a donation before the end of the year, no matter the size, you will be participating in not just a generalized movement to transform culture, but the actual improvement of hundreds of workers’ day-to-day lives by providing access to those simple but vital things which can create enormous gratitude–community, sustenance, and growth. If you are able, I urge you to join us in helping raise $30,000 before the end of 2025 to fill gaps in our budget created by continued neglect of the Bottle Bill by lawmakers and drastic drops in institutional giving by funders. This simple support matters now more than ever.

This coming Tuesday, December 2nd, is “Giving Tuesday,” a great day to make a financial contribution, but also a great day to keep your feet on the ground and participate in something simply real, like the volunteer activity we’re hosting at Sure We Can, where you can help us count and sort bottles and cans as well as meet the canners we serve and like-minded allies–a chance to make a concrete offering and to build the community and sense of possibility that forms the container of that simple, all-important, gratitude. While I believe it will take more than gratitude for us to find our way through these dark days, I’m certain that without it, we’re already lost.

Siente cómo el mundo ha vuelto más que algunas veces desde el último Día de Acción de Gracias. Es más difícil que nada hacer un sentimiento general de agradecimiento sentir auténtico–los lugares comunes se marchitan de enfrentar las realidades duras que nos atacan diariamente. Si no queremos ser perdidos en la frustración, el cinismo, y la desesperación, la llamada para reflejarnos con intención y cultivar el agradecimiento tiene mucha urgencia. Para mi, la fiesta del Día de Acción de Gracias ofrece una oportunidad que simplificar este esfuerzo, y encontrar el agradecimiento en cosas pequeñas y reales, cómo ser presente con las personas a quien yo cuido, contemplar la renovación que pasa en acabar el año, y celebrar la subsistencia de la vida y lo cordial de compartir comida buena con los demás. Yo experimento esto cómo una antidota contra la historia de extracción y violencia que tiene la fiesta, y las maneras en que esta historia sigue en nuestro tiempo duro.

Ahora también es el tiempo de empezar a recaudar fondos a fin de año para organizaciones como nosotros, y en que los lugares comunes vienen con fuerza llena. No somos inmunes contra esto–necesitamos apoyo financiero y no somos tímidos de esto. Todavía, de considerar cuál de las causas importantes y valiosas en el mundo que alguien puede apoyar, me gusta pensar que Sure We Can puede ofrecer una parte de esta simplicidad. Si eliges en apoyarnos con una donación antes que fin del año, no importa el tamaño, puede participar no solo en un movimiento generalizado de cambiar la cultura, pero también en mejorar directamente las vidas de cientos de trabajadores por dar acceso en esas cosas simples pero necesarias que puede hacer agradecimiento enorme–comunidad, subsistencia, y crecencia. Si puedes, te pido en unirnos en recaudar $30,000 antes del fin de 2025 para llenar hoyos en nuestro presupuesto hecho por negligencia que sigue de la Ley de Envases por los funcionarios y caídas drásticas en donaciones de los instituciones que dan fondos. Este simple apoyo importa más que nada.

El martes que viene, el 2 de Diciembre, es el “Martes de Dar,” un día perfecto que dar dinero, pero también un día perfecto que quedar los pies por la tierra y participar en algo simplemente real, cómo la actividad de voluntad que estamos presentando en Sure We Can, en que puedes ayudarnos en clasificar botellas y latas y también conocer a los recicladores que servimos y los aliados que tienen la misma mente que ti–una oportunidad que hacer una ofrenda concreta y hacer la comunidad y sentimiento de posibilidad que hace el contenedor de este simple, pero todo-importante, agradecimiento. Aunque yo creo que necesita más que el agradecimiento que encontrar nuestro camino a través de estos días oscuros, estoy seguro que sin agradecimiento, ya estamos perdidos.
