Making Meaning
Dear friend,
I hope you are spending this holiday season warm and safe. I hope, if you can, you’re resting. After a tough year, we’ve earned it!
The winter holidays make me reflect on my secular upbringing–I’ve mentioned this before, I think. I feel lucky to have been able to form my own understanding of the meaning of this time, my own relationship with its tropes–warmth in the cold, fellowship, generosity, renewal, persistence. I think the need to form meaning from conflicting or absent traditions has led me to the sense that it’s the forming of meaning that matters in the end–whether it comes from a candle flame, tree bough, gingerbread, or, for that matter, bottles and cans.
Sure We Can is a project formed in the same spirit–a coming together of people with different traditions and backgrounds in the in-between spaces, using the material of their lives to find meaning in charity, conviviality, solidarity–and work. It’s an effort to synthesize new traditions that can locate meaning in a challenging world, in which anyone can participate!

Espero que estés pasando esta temporada de fiestas seguro y con calor. Espero, si puedes, que te descanses. Al fin de un año duro, ¡hemos ganado la oportunidad de descansar!
Las fiestas del invierno me hacen reflejarme en mi educación secular–creo que la he mencionado antes. Siento que tengo suerte en tener mi propia forma de entender el significado de este tiempo, y mi propia relación con sus tropos–calor dentro el frío, compañerismo, generosidad, renovación, persistencia. Creo que la necesidad que hacer el significado por tradiciones que tienen conflicto o que no hay me ha guiado al sentido que es hacer el significado que importa al final–por la llama de vela, rama de árbol, el pan de jengibre, o de hecho, por las botellas y latas.
Sure We Can es un proyecto hecho en el mismo espíritu–una unidad de personas con tradiciones y experiencias diferentes en los espacios entre los otros lugares, usando el material de sus vidas para encontrar significado en caridad, convivir, solidaridad–y trabajo. Es un esfuerzo de sintetizar tradiciones nuevas que pueden encontrar significado en mundo con tantos desafíos, ¡en que cada uno puede participar!
