Dear friend,
I’m writing this on the way home from Albany, which can feel like it’s on another planet. In Albany, things that seem straightforward are in fact hopelessly complex. It's a place where the possible becomes impossible. I went up there to push for expansion of the Bottle Bill—yet again—and am leaving with a deep yearning to return to Brooklyn and to the work, where we don’t just advocate for one abstract issue among many issues or prioritize power games over people’s lives, but strive to connect with people directly, and make a difference that can be felt.
If you share my frustration with systemic inaction and my wish for a more engaged and personal sense of civics, I invite you to roll up your sleeves and join us in two upcoming in-person activities! First, we’re restarting our monthly open volunteer days tomorrow, with bottle and can sorting from 12-2p. If you can’t make it tomorrow, check out our website for more opportunities throughout the summer and fall!
This coming Tuesday we’re doing something really exciting: a pop-up redemption center in Columbus Park in Manhattan, where we’ll be serving a new community of canners and simulating the conditions of the expanded Bottle Bill. That means from 8a to 12p, we’ll be redeeming bottles and cans for 10c and accepting all the types of containers that can’t currently be redeemed. We're inspired by the work of our sister organization, the Binners Project of Vancouver, to use this one-day event to demonstrate the potentially transformative impact that modernizing the bottle bill could make. If you can’t make it to redeem your bottles and cans, join us in the evening from 4p to 6p for a community panel to discuss canners, their impact on our city, and the systems that both support and constrain them. We'll talk about the Bottle Bill, of course, but we’ll also connect this legislative effort to the real lives that people live every day.
Finally, if you’re inspired to pitch in to the effort in Albany to pass the Bigger Better Bottle Bill, we’re co-hosting a call-in drive between now and the end of the legislative session, June 5th. Join the concerted effort on Wednesday, May 27th, or if you can’t, find another time to call New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and tell them this matters to you before time runs out!

Estoy escribiendo en el camino al hogar desde Albany, que puede sentir como un otro planeta. En Albany, las cosas que parecen simples de hecho son irremediablemente complejas. Es un lugar dónde el posible se convierte en el imposible. Primeramente, estamos empezando otra vez nuestros días de voluntad mensual mañana, con clasificación de botellas y latas entre 12-2 de la tarde. El martes que viene hacemos algo muy emocionante: un centro de reciclaje temporario en el Parque Columbus en Manhattan, en que serviremos una comunidad nueva de recicladores y simularemos las condiciones de la Ley de Envases expandida. Eso significa que desde las 8 de la mañana al mediodía, estamos comprando botellas y latas por 10 centavos y recibiendo todos los tipos de contenedores que ahora no puede reciclar. Somos inspirados por el trabajo de nuestra organización hermana, el Binners Project de Vancouver, para usar este evento de un día para mostrar el impacto transformativo que creciendo la Ley de Envases puede hacer. Si no puedes llegar para reciclar tus botellas y latas, únete con nosotros en la tarde desde las 4 hasta las 6 para un panel de la comunidad para hablar en los recicladores, el impacto que ellos hacen en nuestra ciudad, y los sistemas que les apoyan y les obligan. Hablaremos sobre la Ley de Envases, claro, pero también conectaremos este esfuerzo legislativo con las vidas reales que la gente vive cada día.
