Spooky Birthday!
Dear friends,
Boo! Halloween is around the corner…
I’ve always held the holiday very dear. Dressing up, exploring the neighborhood, playing games, eating candy till you’re catatonic, perhaps some mild pranking – all rites of passage for any child today. As a theater kid at heart, I regard it as an obligation to keep the spirit of Halloween alive into my adulthood, and to spread spooky cheer as far as I can. So we always have a party here at Sure We Can to recognize the holiday.
This year, however, we’re taking it a little further. October is also the birth-month of Sure We Can – we’re 17 years old this year – and we thought we’d combine the two big days into one autumnal extravaganza! We’re inviting our community to join us at Sure We Can the afternoon of October 26th, from 3 to 7pm, for pumpkin carving, games, live music, candy, real food, and fun! Costumes are strongly encouraged.
Aside from the specialness of the holiday, we’re grateful for the opportunity just to throw an event and gather our friends to meet and enjoy each other’s company. We made a lot of new friends at Open House New York this past weekend (shout out to those who joined our list), and we can’t wait for them to meet our longtime allies! We also treasure the opportunity to share in person with you everything that’s been going on at Sure We Can and the exciting opportunities to get more deeply involved we have coming up.

Siempre he cogido esta fiesta muy cerca. Poner disfraces, explorar el barrio, jugar juegos, comer dulces hasta que llegas enfermo, quizás algunas bromas leves – todos ritos de iniciación para cada niño hoy. Como un niño de teatro en corazón, pienso que es mi obligación guardar el espíritu del Halloween en mi edad adulta, y para extender la alegría espeluznante lo más posible. Entonces siempre tenemos una fiesta aquí en Sure We Can para reconocer la fiesta.
Este año, sin embargo, hacemos un poco más. Octubre también es el mes de nacimiento de Sure We Can – tenemos 17 años este año – ¡y pensamos que combinamos los dos días en un gran evento de otoño! Infrastructure Update!
Dear friends,
As we approach the waning of the year, and start to look toward our next priorities, I want to share with you some details on how we’ve taken advantage of your incredible support, and the funds you helped us raise last year, to improve the infrastructure and conditions at our East Williamsburg site.
First, let me acknowledge that we have not been able to undertake the large-scale concrete repair that we had hoped. As part of our long-term infrastructure plan, we’re working to install plumbing and running water on our lot, which is complicated by the subway running directly underneath it, and the easement that the MTA holds on part of our property. We don’t want to redo the concrete and then have to rip it all up again to install plumbing, so as we create a deeper, more comprehensive infrastructure plan, we’re using the resources you’ve provided us to pay for the materials and labor to make smaller quality-of-life improvements on the lot:
We spot-fixed some of the worst cracks in the concrete. The surface we walk on every day won’t wait for us to be ready to fix it to keep deteriorating, so we’re identifying the most significant issues and performing small patches to ensure safe access for canners, especially those with mobility issues, and a smooth surface for our forklift and other equipment to run on for loading trucks.
We opened up a shipping container and added storage space. Storage has presented challenges throughout the history of the organization, as almost all of our spare space gets used for bottle and can overflow, and our nature as nuts for repair and reuse means we end up accumulating all sorts of stuff onsite. We’ve opened up a new access point in a container which will allow us to have a dedicated storage space that will mean what we store is more safely held and easier to access.
We dealt with storm damage and improved resiliency in the face of changing climate conditions. The intense storms this summer knocked a tree down in the back of our lot and sent a bough from another tree crashing through the roof of one of our working areas. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but we’ve had to find ways to dispose of the wood, both conventional and creative, as well as repair the damage done to our structures. We’ve additionally taken the opportunity to fortify our structures so they’re stronger and more resilient against wind, rain, snow, and falling objects like pieces of trees.
We’ve cleaned up disused areas and opened more flexible space. We’ve seized the moment as new landlords to dig into the corners of our lot, where half-finished projects, potentially usable material, and frankly sometimes just junk has accumulated over the years. We’ve cleaned out the nooks and crannies, which has opened up more flexible space for bottle and can overflow, which will allow us to use our more open and accessible spaces for programming.
We will replace our deteriorating roll-up gate. We have made do for years with a roll-up gate that was prone to misalignment and jamming, which worsened through our years of tenancy. This is a source of anxiety for our staff, exasperation for our maintenance team, and a security risk. Now that we’re owners, we can act on this, and this autumn, we’re going to replace the whole thing.

The Bottle Bill Campaign Begins Again!
Dear friend,
I hope this finds you well, and if you live in New York, enjoying the first crisp hints of autumn! The end of the year’s just around the corner, which means we’re deep in our preparatory work for the upcoming legislative session, which begins in January. As those who’ve watched this space for a little while will know, in June of this year our effort to raise the bottle deposit on which canners depend for their income, and which hasn’t changed for over 40 years, was unsuccessful. The legislature declined to act to support the state’s most effective recycling system and some of its most marginalized workers.
Despite our leaders’ dismaying lack of compassion and initiative we are undaunted, and are fired up to keep pushing them to do what’s right! To make it happen, we need as many like-minded people as possible to join our campaign. To that end, the Bottle Bill 40 Coalition and New York is Not Disposable are hosting an info-and-action-packed, energizing hour focused on reducing trash, litter, and climate emissions with the New York Bigger Better Bottle Bill. During the event, we'll also mention the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act, which would reduce the largest single source of plastic pollution–single-use plastic packaging–and make packaging less toxic and more sustainable.
If you’re part of an organization that supports environmental justice, green jobs, and/or marginalized workers, consider signing the letter of support for the Bottle Bill!
Join us to learn about the bills and what you can do to support the grassroots movement to get them over the finish line and address the solid waste crisis in 2025!

Our Friend Pierre
Working at Sure We Can is never just a job. Doing community work means more than performing tasks and fulfilling functions–it means being part of the community. And to be part of a community means being among and alongside people, sharing in their efforts, challenges, failures, successes, and tribulations. This experience of communal being is a source of incredible joy and inspiration, and at certain moments, like now, also brings great sadness and difficulty.
With a heavy heart I must share that on July 1st, our beloved community member of over a decade, board member, canner, musician, thinker, and friend Pierre Simmons passed away after a long period of health challenges and a short but fierce battle with liver cancer. He was an extremely special person whose passion for supporting the marginalized and underserved was matched only by his vast curiosity, firm faith, and deep and compassionate spirit. We loved him so much and we are heartbroken at his loss.
As we celebrate together, so do we mourn. Pierre’s great love of life guides us not toward the sorrow of his passing but rather toward his vision of a world where canners, and all vulnerable people, are free, empowered, successful, and creative. We’ll gather together tomorrow and remember all he brought to us and out of us, to take his spirit up into us, and to come closer together as a community through understanding of our shared loss. If you were in any way touched by Pierre’s life, please join us.

Trabajar en Sure We Can nunca es solo trabajo. Hacer el trabajo comunitario significa más que hacer tarea y cumplir funciones–significa ser parte de la comunidad. Con corazón pesado necesito compartir que en el 1 de Julio, nuestro querido miembro de la comunidad de más que 10 años, miembro de la junta directiva, reciclador, músico, pensador, y amigo Pierre Simmons se falleció después de un tiempo largo de obstáculos de salud, y una lucha breve pero feroz con cáncer del hígado. Fue una persona tan especial que tenía una pasión para apoyar los marginalizados y inmerecidos que fue igualada sólo por su curiosidad enorme, fé tan fuerte, y espíritu profundo y compasivo. The Bottle Bill Hangs By A Thread!
I have dire news to share. The New York State legislature is in the final days of its session, and we are hearing that the Bottle Bill is paralyzed and in danger of not moving at all. New York State Senate leadership has even eliminated the possibility of just raising the handling fee redemption centers depend on, meaning venues canners depend on, that are already in extremely precarious financial positions, may be doomed.
This would be a sorrowful outcome, and one that through inaction does great harm to marginalized workers, small businesses, the environment, and the state’s own revenue. We don’t have much time, but if this matters to you, please reach out TODAY to the office of Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins ((914) 423-4031 / scousins@nysenate.gov) to insist that she do what she can to save the redemption industry from collapse. We are of course not just talking about recycling but escalating loss of jobs, livelihoods, and well-being!
People are suffering and those in power are indifferent. It’s a story playing out across our whole society and at all levels of government. It takes each of us standing up and saying “No more!” to change this situation. We must seize this opportunity to speak the truth, and demand what is right. And if we lose, the fight must continue.

Bottle Bill Crunch Time!

We so much enjoyed our LOVE YOUR MOTHER party last week! The rain didn’t defeat us and we had an amazing time. Thanks so much to Collective Focus, Evolfo, Jairito Y La Onda, Kim The Beat, Tre D’Ambrocia, Doris from A-Pou’s Taste, and all the vendors for making it such a fun, eclectic, and memorable event. There’s nothing more important for us than making space for people to be people, and it’s so rewarding to see canners, artists, makers, and all kinds of other folks celebrating together in our space. If you missed it, don’t worry, there’ll be more to come soon!
And we have all sorts of other ways for you to get involved. It’s last-minute, but we’re having a counting and sorting volunteer activity at Sure We Can tomorrow from 10am to 12pm. It’s a great way to get a hands-on sense of the work that actually goes into dealing with millions of empty bottles and cans. We want to do this on a regular basis, so if you can’t make it tomorrow, keep your eyes open for the next opportunity.
It also remains crunch time for the NY Bottle Bill! We’re closer than we’ve ever been, and that means our opposition (companies like Coca-Cola and Pepsi) are freaking out and using all of their corporate muscle to stop the bill from passing. We can’t let them win!!

New Party Date - May 10th!!
Good news! We’ve chosen a new date for our benefit concert, “Love Your Mother!” And though it’s no longer Earth Day (though as the SWC staff keep reminding me, isn’t every day Earth Day?), the theme still works: our new date is Friday, May 10th, right before Mother’s Day. So even as we honor our individual mothers, we can take a moment to celebrate the planet that gave, and continues to give, life to us all.
We’re hosting awesome Brooklyn bands Evolfo and Jairito Y La Onda, joined by DJs Kim The Beat and Tre D’Ambrocia! We’re of course hoping for better weather than last time, but even if not, the party will happen rain or shine. Join us!

¡Buenas noticias! Hemos elegido una nueva fecha para nuestro concierto, “¡Ama a Tu Madre!” Y aunque no es el Día de la Tierra (pero como el personal de SWC me sigue recordando, ¿no es todos los días el Día de la Tierra?), el tema todavía sirve: nuestra nueva fecha es el viernes, el 10 de Mayo, antes del Día de la Madre. Earth Day Concert Postponed!
Unfortunately, today we made the tough decision to postpone tomorrow’s concert at Sure We Can, due to incoming rain and cold weather. It’s hard to believe after a gorgeous day like Monday’s that tomorrow we’ll be back below 50 degrees, but it seems we’ll just have to get used to this kind of unpredictability–if we want to honor the Earth, we’ll have to meet her where she’s at! We’re lucky to have a beautiful, open-air lot, and we’ve been lucky too to have lovely weather for many of our past events, so we’ll make room for one rain-check. We’re still super disappointed, but will absolutely be rescheduling, so keep your eyes peeled!
And, of course, we still have some fun Earth Day offerings! Join us on the day itself, April 22, for a sequence of fun and educational activities that will give you a deeper appreciation for Brooklyn, canners, community, and the planet! We’ll kick it off at 11am with a local street cleanup, followed by a lunch break, then spend some time learning about the daily work of canners by counting and sorting recyclables and then create small upcycled planters–you’ll be able to take home a new seedling in a handmade container! Finally, we’ll conclude with an info session on the New York State Bottle Bill, and information on how you can get involved in the campaign to create better conditions for canners statewide. Join us, for part or all of the day–rain or shine!

Infortunadamente, hoy hicimos la decisión dura para posponer el concierto de mañana aquí en Sure We Can, por razón de lluvia y clima fría que vienen. Es difícil creer que después de un día tan hermoso, con Lunes, que mañana regresamos debajo de 50 grados, pero parece que necesitamos acostumbrarnos en ese tipo de imprevisibilidad–si queremos honrar la Tierra, ¡necesitamos encontrarla dónde ya está! Somos afortunados de tener un lote hermoso y abierto al cielo, y hemos sido afortunados también de tener un clima perfecto para muchos de los eventos pasados, así hacemos espacio para un vale esta vez. Todavía nos sentimos decepcionados, pero encontraremos una nueva fecha, ¡entonces mantengan los ojos bien abiertos!
Y, por supuesto, ¡todavía tenemos algunos ofrecimientos divertidos para el Día de la Tierra! Earth Day Excitement!
Dear friend,
Spring is almost upon us, and amidst the sheets of rain and occasional eclipse and earthquake (!!!), the magnolias and cherry blossoms are starting to peek out and herald milder days to come. It also means Earth Day is almost here, and as usual we’ve got an array of activities planned on McKibbin Street, so we can honor our overburdened planet!
First and foremost, a few days before the day itself, we’re throwing a benefit concert and party in collaboration with neighborhood allies Collective Focus, and inviting everyone who’s available to join us for a night of amazing live music and fun! We’ll have local bands Evolfo and Jairito Y La Onda, as well as DJ Kim the Beat and Tre D’Ambrocia providing music, and local vendors Unicorn Dynasty, Luxury Vandal, Crystal Hart, and more selling their products! It’ll be a ton of fun, and all proceeds will benefit Sure We Can and Collective Focus’ efforts to build community and connection in Brooklyn and beyond. Join us!
Then, on April 22nd, Earth Day itself, we’ll be having activities throughout the day, including a McKibbin Street cleanup, volunteer activities including sorting redeemables alongside our canner community members, and a discussion on our advocacy efforts to expand New York State’s Bottle Bill and effect real institutional change for the benefit of our planet! If you’re in NYC in mid-April, don’t miss these awesome chances to dig deeper into the landscape around environmental justice, culture, and sustainability in our unique urban environment!
