The new year is almost upon us!
Last week, I wrote about how I grew up in a secular household, without celebrating Christmas. Instead, my family celebrated New Year’s Day, which let us as kids participate in the holiday spirit without attaching it to all the cultural baggage that Christmas can carry. It also built up in me a reverence for the new year. To this day, despite all my tendencies toward practicality or even pessimism, I always feel a suffusion of unaccountable hope and possibility around the turning of the year. What will come? What new developments, new challenges, delightful surprises of which I haven’t even dreamed? A sense of the peaceful unknown–mysterious, but rich with potential rather than peril.
We’ve had a wild ride of a year, full of incredible successes like the purchase of our lot, and brutal setbacks, like the loss of our dear friend Ryan Thoreson Carson. Looking ahead to the next one, I don’t know what to expect, but I know that all we have passed through will strengthen us with the experience and wherewithal to navigate it with even more aplomb, compassion, and grace. I’m fortified in this knowledge by your presence–our network of allies and supporters who have helped us in ways big and small to make a better future possible.
Our mission is to pave the way, figuratively and literally, into this future. To those of you who’ve made contributions to that mission, I extend my deep gratitude. This year you’ve helped us raise more than we ever have before to make the lives of New York City canners better. Yet we still have more to strive for! ¡El nuevo año está casi aquí!
La semana pasada escribí sobre cómo crecí en un hogar laico, sin celebrar la Navidad. En cambio, mi familia celebraba el Año Nuevo, lo que nos permitía participar en el espíritu festivo sin tener que cargar con todo el bagaje cultural que conlleva la Navidad. También creó en mí una reverencia por el nuevo año. Hasta el día de hoy, a pesar de mi tendencia a la practicidad o incluso al pesimismo, siempre siento un torrente de esperanza y posibilidades inexplicables al llegar el nuevo año. ¿Qué vendrá? ¿Qué nuevos acontecimientos, nuevos retos, agradables sorpresas con las que ni siquiera he soñado? Una sensación de paz desconocida, misteriosa, pero llena de potencial.
Hemos vivido un año muy intenso, lleno de éxitos increíbles, como la compra de nuestro lote, y de obstáculos brutales, como la pérdida de nuestro querido amigo Ryan Thoreson Carson. Mirando hacia adelante, no sé qué esperar, pero sé que todo lo que hemos pasado nos fortalecerá con la experiencia y los medios para navegar con aún más confianza, compasión y gracia. Me siento fortalecida en este conocimiento por vuestra presencia: nuestra red de aliados y simpatizantes que nos han ayudado de formas grandes y pequeñas a hacer posible un futuro mejor.
Nuestra misión es construir el camino, en sentido figurado y literal, hacia el futuro. A todos los que han contribuido a esta misión, les expreso mi profunda gratitud. Este año nos has ayudado a recaudar más que nunca para mejorar la vida de los canners de neoyorquinos. Pero aún nos queda mucho por hacer.
