We’re deep in the dreariest part of the year in New York City, when we can go days or weeks without seeing sunshine and New Yorkers grasp desperately at any sign of relief from frigid temperatures and heavy atmospheres. We had a bit of that last week–it climbed back up to over 50 degrees from the previous week’s nadir in the teens. Still, the fact that this temperature whiplash is the result of climate change and a signal of harsher changes to come undercuts whatever pleasure there might be at milder weather. It just reinforces how important it is for us to continue in our mission to reduce waste, mitigate climate change, and build a more sustainable society, where we can enjoy any kind of weather with peaceful hearts and minds unburdened by anxiety for the future.
Not every sign is bleak, however, here at the top of 2024. Others point toward constructive developments and new possibilities. In fact, here at Sure We Can, we were delighted to be informed that we’ve been chosen to receive Brooklyn Org’s Spark Prize, a highly competitive award that celebrates the folks who are driving critical change here in Brooklyn, our home! We’re so honored to be selected; we see it as recognition not just of Sure We Can the organization, but of the recyclers as well, and the essential role they play in the fabric of our borough and our city. Certainly Brooklyn would be less (and less clean!) without them. So we extend a huge and humble thank you to Brooklyn Org for their recognition, with the hope that support of this kind will become more common, and we can continue to wedge our foot in the door of opportunity, and thereby strengthen and fortify the community of New York City recyclers and their allies.
We’re looking forward to new horizons in 2024! Though we didn’t reach our $100,000 fundraising goal at the end of 2023, we still raised over $85,000 to improve Sure We Can’s infrastructure and make the lives of the recyclers we serve just a little easier. That’s thanks to you and your commitment to our work and community, and we couldn’t be more grateful. It’s just the beginning, however. Let’s keep the momentum going, and make 2024 a year of evolution and transformation, into a better world! ¡Adelante!

Estamos en la parte más deprimente del año en la Ciudad de Nueva York, durante la que podemos tener días o semanas sin ver el sol, y los neoyorquinos buscan cualquier señal para aliviar las temperaturas tan frías y atmósferas pesadas. Tuvimos poco de eso la semana pasada–tenía más calor, más de 50 grados, después del nadir de la semana antes, cuándo fue temperaturas menos de 20. Todavía, el hecho que el cambio de la temperatura es el resultado del cambio climático y una señal de cambios peores viniendo debilita cualquier placer que tenemos en una clima más cómodo. Solo afortiliza cómo importante lo es para seguir en nuestra misión de eliminar los residuos, luchar contra el cambio climático, y hacer una sociedad más sostenible, dónde podemos disfrutar cualquier clima con corazones en paz y cerebros no pesados con preocupaciones sobre el futuro.
Todos las señales no son malas, sin embargo, aquí al principio de 2024. Otras señalan desarrollos constructivos y posibilidades nuevas. De verdad, aquí en Sure We Can, estamos encantados de aprender que hemos sido elegidos para recibir el Premio Spark de Brooklyn Org, un premio muy competitivo que celebra los que están haciendo cambios esenciales aquí en Brooklyn, ¡nuestro hogar!
